:(

Asher's first big knot and it's smack dab on his forehead. He fell when I picked him up from school today. Poor baby :(

I really hope it doesn't turn black and blue.

It's looking a little better since I was able to apply a cool pack to it. He hated that.

Elmo Sings - la la la, Elmo Laughs - ha ha ha

I really enjoyed my company while driving to work today. :)

Lately, we have been reading the book, "So Big" by Elmo.  In the book, Elmo reaches way up high, way down low, sings, laughs, says mama and dada, plays peek-a-boo, etc.  Asher has really gotten into imitating Elmo in this book and has such a fun time doing it!  He's so proud of himself when he gets it right.

He was in such a talking mood this morning, so I figured I'd ask him to do some of the things in the book.  Here's a cute video.

He has also started jabbering "Mama, Daddy, Mama, Daddy" for no reason at all. I guess he just loves his Mama and Daddy. :) He has mastered these two words (among others).

9/11 Ten Years Later

Ten years ago today, I remember driving from my speech class to my history class at Hinds when I heard the news on the radio about the north tower of the World Trade Center being hit by an airplane. Just like everyone else, I was in disbelief. How devastating. I remember getting to my history class and it was all anyone could talk about. Our teacher discussed it with us for the first half of the class. I remember watching the news just about all day every day that week.... grieving for the families who couldn't find their loved ones.

It's ten years later, and today was also quite emotional. Watching the specials on tv about Flight 93, the towers, and the Pentagon really makes me sad... especially now that I have a family of my own. I couldn't imagine what these widows were/are going through with small children. How could anyone explain to their child that their daddy isn't coming home? I hope I never have to do that.

We spent our morning at Fannin United Methodist Church where my father-in-law is the music director. This is a really small country church, but one of the most hospitable churches I've ever attended. Everyone makes a point to say hello and actually get to know you.

Fannin UMC
Robbie's dad called him Friday night and asked if he would come share his testimony in the service Sunday morning since the preacher was out sick. Of course he would! He already had a speech planned because he shared a similar story at the Cursillo reunion just a few months ago. Who knew Robbie could preach a sermon?! He did an amazing job today. Also on Sunday morning's line-up was a solo sung by Faith Harris, "Temporary Home". Yet again, another Harris did an awesome job. I was lucky enough to catch her practicing just before the service this morning. Asher thought he'd do a little dance number on the alter while she sang. I couldn't get his cute moves on video, but it was hilarious (and sooo cute)! He's an attention stealer, for sure.

Here is a picture of the dancing.

Today one of my worst fears came true.  Asher locked himself in the truck.  Luckily, we were at home and the weather was pleasant, which means we didn't really have to freak out over a heat stroke.  Let me back up a little and explain what he was doing in the truck.  For a while now, Asher has had an obsession over driving.  Anything that has a steering wheel has his full attention.  Sometimes we let him sit in the drivers seat - with the vehicle off, of couse - and play around with all the gadgets.  Apparently, he clicked the "lock" button on Robbie's keys, but I didn't know it.  I shut the drivers side door so I could get to the back passenger door, try to open that door only to find that its LOCKED!  *GASP*  What in the world do we do now??  We dont have a spare key.  Robbie and I try to get Asher to click the unlcok button on the key, then try to get him to manually unlock the door, pull on the door handle, try opening the window from the back of the truck....nothing is working.  Asher thinks its all a funny game.  We're both trying to keep our cool so he doesn't pick up on our tension and start getting upset.  It works for about 5 minutes, and then he figures out that he is stuck in there.  I felt horrible

A couple of minutes pass with no luck of unlocking the truck, so I call a locksmith. I won't go into how unprofessional they were, but once they found out a child was in the truck they told me to call the fire department.  I handed the phone to Robbie because I could barely keep my cool at this point.  He calls 911 and we wait.  It feels like 10 minutes go by (when it was probably only 3-5 minutes) and a policeman shows up in our driveway.  The firetruck showed up shortly after.  This big red truck immediately got Asher's attention.  He forgot that he was trapped and all of a sudden was very interested in what these people were doing outside the window.  They did open the door with a slim jim device within a couple of minutes...thank you Mr.and Ms. Fireman!

Of course all of this commotion alerted our neighbors to all come outside and check on us...how embarassing!!  Who knew 15 people lived in our cul-de-sac?

Lesson learned....Don't let Asher play in the truck with the keys in his hand.  And GET A SPARE KEY!

Guilty

I read this article today and thought this quote was pretty accurate as to how I feel sometimes.

"Working moms have a love-hate relationship with their jobs.  On one hand, they told us in our Mom Secrets survey, they hate spending time away from their kids, and miss them like crazy when they’re stuck at work. Walking away from a child crying "Mommy!" at day care is its own special brand of torture. On the other hand, sometimes moms secretly love the escape. After a weekend of breaking up sibling fights, changing dirty diapers and weathering toddler tantrums, even the most hectic workplace can feel like a tranquil oasis."
I have always felt a sense of guilt when I even think about this because I spent lots of time when Asher was little finding ways to stay home with him - work part time, work frome home, not work at all.  I was a little bummed out when that didn't work out for me.  However, now I feel like if I didn't have some adult interaction during the week, I'd probably go crazy.  I guess I'll find out how I really feel in the near future if/when I do get to stay home with Asher all day every day.  :)

I'd like to conclude this guilt trip by saying I have a new respect for SAHMs.  I do realize how difficult of a job it really is.

We love Dada!

Happy Father's Day, "Dada"!  Asher and I are blessed to have you as our family leader and role model.  We love you so much!  Thank you for being the best husband and father we could ever ask for.  We look forward to many more years together.  Here are a few of my favorite pictures of you and Asher together this past year.

Climby McClimberson

So last night I was cleaning and re-arranging Asher's room for a few minutes, and I walk back into the living room and find him doing this.

I had to stop the video because he proceeded to climb on top of the coffe table and stand up on top of it.  I have my hands full!  Earlier the same night, I walked into the kitchen and found him sitting in our kitchen chairs (which are gathering table height) sitting at the table eating Cheerios off of his high chair tray from earlier that morning (no, I don't have time in the mornings to clean up the mess we make at breakfast).  He has never gotten up there before, nor did it ever occur to him to climb up that high on the chair.

Oh, and yet another climbing story to share.  Earlier this week, Asher and I went to Robbie's softball game in Ridgeland.  I didn't get to watch much of the game because I was having too much fun chasing a toddler around the complex.  Asher saw Robbie in the dugout and toddled over there to his Dada.  He realized a fence was blocking his way, so he proceeded to climb up the fence... like he had been doing that his whole life!  Where did he learn that?!  He climbed up 4 links of the fence before we even noticed what he was doing.

I guess we're going to have to watch him like a hawk now.  But let's face it, gone are the days when I can protect my baby from falls, cuts, and scrapes.  He is too much of an adventurer.  Boys will be boys.

Baby Sayers On The Way!

Congratulations to Heather and David on becoming expectant parents!  We don't know many details yet, but baby Sayers should make his or her debut sometime in November.  I'm super excited to get to spoil another neice or nephew and have many play dates in the future.  We love ya'll!

Update:  It's a girl!!

Another Video

He has taken up to 8 steps so far, but he's mostly taking step after step as fast as he can so he can dive head first into your lap.  This video actually shows him keeping his balance...until the end!

(sorry these videos are turned sideways)

My baby is growing up

My mother in law has been a dear these past two weeks while we were on vacation and emailed us a few videos of Asher. This is my favorite one.

We all know spaghetti is my favorite dinner. I think it's Asher's favorite, too!

Let's read this book, mommy!

He is getting more interested in books.  He's reading Itsy Bitsy Spider.  He likes to point at the pictures.

Asher's 1st Birthday

Asher turned ONE on January 31, 2011!  I can't believe my baby is now a toddler.  I don't like this cheesy expression, but time really does fly by.  I really enjoy Asher more and more the older he gets.  It's so fun to watch him grow and learn new things.  I am one proud mama!

This year I hope to take advantage of this time by documenting our life together on a more consistent basis.  Hopefully a year from now I'll be able to look back on 2011 and remember happy times, first steps, bumps and bruises, how much he's grown, etc.

Now on to the birthday party!  I organized an alphabet themed party for Asher's first.  Think wooden alphabet blocks, which was the basis of my decorations.  I pondered for a long time on finding the perfect (a.k.a. impressive) theme for his birthday party, but then I realized he's a baby!  I wanted it to be baby-ish.  I wanted something fun for the kids - after all, it's Asher's party not my party.  That's why I chose primary colors of blue, yellow and red (and threw green in there as well) with all kinds of letters, numbers and balloons everywhere.

This is his invitation, which I think matched the cake perfectly.

We had a fantastic cake, which I ate for days.  I think it tasted better and better every day.  My cousin's wife, Sherry, made the cake.  She is so talented!

Asher liked the cake, too.  He mostly got handfuls of icing and never really got to the bread.

Guests were greeted by these birthday balloon wreaths which I made.

The food table consisted of meatballs, sausage balls, corn dip, fruits, and a chocolate cheeseball.  All but the cheeseball were made by the grandparents.  They came to my rescue since we had to go out of town the two days before the party.  I made this centerpiece for the food table:

I wanted a place where Asher and his friends could play on the floor since our house is mostly concrete floors.  This was a nice little alphabet puzzle mat that his Nana and Papa gave him for his birthday.  I think it came in handy and it's something Asher can play with for years.

Some of Asher's gifts:
Alphabet mat pictured above
Clothes & Shoes - we needed these!  And all my friends are very stylish so he got some great looking outfits.
Rock, Roll N Ride Trike
B. Parum Pum Pum Drum - he loves drums.  I guess he didn't want to take after his father and play the trumpet (or his mother on the clarinet!)
Stuffed animals
Leap Frog learning animal - not sure of the proper name for this.
Books
Eating utensils - bowls, forks, spoons
Nesting blocks
Puzzles
Wooden Toybox (from us)

I didn't have a chance to take pictures of everyone, these were the guests:
Nana and Papa
Mamaw and Papaw
Great Papaw Jordan and Great Mamaw Mary Jordan
Great Memaw Stewart
Aunt Heather and Uncle David
Aunt Faith
Jonathan, Andrea and Emma
Paul, Leslie Ann and Madilyn
Alex, Kim and Brayden
Stephanie
Tera and Chris
Casey, Marlee and Baker
Delaney

It was a great party and I can't wait to plan the next one!

Bubbles!

This is definitely Asher's favorite time of day...

He usually does not get a bubble bath since I have figured this seems to dry out his skin, but he did have so much fun in the bubbles.  Even if he is throwing a screaming fit, he always perks up in the bath.  Maybe he'll stay that way forever... a mother can hope, right?

The Big Easy

This post is a little late.  After completing P90X (Robbie completed, I got to day 75), we deserved a celebratory trip.  "Where to?"  New Orleans!  It's nice to live within driving distance to big cities...just don't make me live in them.  Robbie took the liberty of choosing the hotel, Hotel Monteleone, which he kept a secret from me.  As we were driving into the French Quarter, we turned on Royal St which is one block over from Bourbon St.  As you know, everyone walks down the middle of these streets all day, so pretty much every road we tried to turn on was blocked.  We haven't been to N.O. enough to know all the back roads, so we circled this hotel a few times before we figured out how to get to the Valet.

We checked in to our beautiful, small quaint Victorian room on the ninth floor.  This room became home to us for two days, and we stayed in it more than we would have liked as we were both sick with the stomach virus all weekend.

We both felt well enough on Saturday morning/afternoon to tour the city.  We walked to Jackson Square and hopped on a horse carriage to take a tour of the French Quarter.

At the end of the French Quarter, we toured St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 - the oldest cemetery in New Orleans.  And boy was it old.  Supposedly a famous voodoo priestess is buried there - Marie Laveau.  People come to her grave and draw three X's on it in hopes that she will grant them their wish.  Another famous plot is owned by Nicholas Cage.  He built a pyramid tomb for which one day he will reside.  It's very modern looking and doesn't really fit the feel of the ancient tombs next to it.  I didn't get any pictures of this as my camera battery was dead, but here is a picture of Marie Laveau's mausoleum I took from here.

We didn't get to partake in any of the delicious food since we were both pretty sick to our stomach.  On the bright side, I think I lost six pounds that weekend!

Five Years Already?!

Robbie and I celebrated our fifth wedding anniversary on New Years Eve last weekend.  It really doesn't feel like that long ago that we got married, honeymooned in Maui, and started our life together in Atlanta.  Our first anniversary we took a mini trip to The Biltmore Estate in NC.  We made some nice memories there - just the two of us, COLD, beatiful scenery and romantic.  We really haven't done much for our 2nd, 3rd, and 4th anniversaries except go out for our typical date night.  We don't want to get in a rut of overlooking our anniversary, so we decided to take a second honeymoon this time - Italy in March 2011.  We start our two week vacation in Venice, then on to Florence, Siena, and end up in Rome.  I'll take lots of pictures to share later!

Anyway, since we do always try to go out for our anniversary on New Years Eve, we did plan for that this year as well.  Since a huge storm decided to make its presense that evening, we pushed our date back a night.  Our plan was to eat Italian and go see a movie.  We called every Italian place in Jackson that interested us, and every single one of them were closed for New Years Day.  Bummer!  So we just went to the movie (saw Black Swan - very interesting and awkward at the same time) and grabbed a pizza to go.  We'll continue our dinner night next weekend - hey, two nights of celebration isn't bad, right?

Happy Anniversary to us!
